the minneapolis free music society (MFMS)

from "the city of lakes" comes the living, breathing, evolving minneapolis free music society. in a city rich with theatre (home to a theatre market ranked third-largest in the u.s.) and an abundance of visual and performing artists, it is of no surprise that the MFMS draws such a diverse and talented group of improvisers to their monthly event at the acadia cafe in minneapolis's west bank.

from the collectives own mouth, and a nod to the many inspirational improv collectives that have come before; "the music is never written, rehearsed or otherwise preconceived. the members of the society play living music that is subject to, and informed by, the immediate environment. there are no soloists, and no accompanists. the music is performed on an intuitive level with a high degree of awareness."

listen to excerpts from "joanie" or "chachi" and find yourself in a dimly lit, underground, post-apocalyptic jazz club lost in a sound that reminds you that the world has fallen apart around you while simultaneously carrying you away from it. or let "poem from jail" invoke an entirely different and totally surreal vision, reassuring the listener that no matter where their sessions lead, the result is always exactly what they profess in their mission statement.

"it is our belief that the process of collaboration provides important moments of cross-fertilization that enrich our individual creative paths … it is our mission to create new musical worlds that can challenge and confront the old, while also acknowledge the musical traditions from which we have emerged."
